Ad Iohannem Pappum
Papæ, Pappe, putas pappum te forte futurum,
Cum iam Papa faber vivat in utopia.
Gallina in altis cata collibus incubat ovis
Cristata, hæc Christi (si pote) pascet oves.
To Johannes Pappus
Oh, Pappus, you think perhaps that you will become pope because the creating Father lives in a dream. The cunning hen hatches her eggs on high hills, but because of the crest she may feed the Christ's sheep.
Johannes Pappus (1549-1610) was an orthodox Lutherian theologian and he worked as professor in Strasbourg from 1578.
